Time to Add a Corollary to the ‘Britney Spears Corollary’ to Godwin’s Law

December 19, 2007

The white zone is for loading and unloading…

of punchlines.

Jamie Lynn Spears, the 16-year-old Zoey 101 star and sister of Britney, told OK! magazine that she’s pregnant and that the father is her boyfriend, Casey Aldridge.

Oh…but it gets better.

Lynne Spears, already grandmother to Britney’s young sons, told the magazine: “I didn’t believe it because Jamie Lynn’s always been so conscientious. She’s never late for her curfew.

Well, look at the bright side.  By my calculation, unlike Britney, Jamie Lynn isn’t eligible to cast a vote in a presidential election until 2012.

Howzzat Tort Reform Workin’ For Y’all?

December 18, 2007

From the Houston Chronk:

Homeowners statewide should plan for higher insurance costs next year as the state’s largest insurer, State Farm Insurance Co., on Monday became the latest to file for a rate increase.

Once again, homeowners in coastal areas and parts of Harris County would be hit with the biggest spikes — as high as 24.6 percent.

Statewide, the average increase would be 3.6 percent, State Farm said.

The company, which covers nearly 1 million homes, or about 29 percent, of the Texas market, said it is facing higher costs for reinsurance, insurance it must buy to be prepared for a major hurricane.

More fumes from the rotting corpse known as the Contract on America.  I lost track of how often I saw the ‘tort reform will lower insurance rates’ lie dangled in front of the brain-dead voting-age products of the Reagan era.  I shouldn’t have been amazed at how many people bought it – hook, line and sinker.  But, I was.

To those who did, a question: How much of that rate increase do you think will be spent on buying legislation to ensure that they never actualy have to pay any claims related to such a hurricane?

In your heart, you know what the answer is.

Sorry I’ve not been around…

December 17, 2007

… I’ve been so busy with work and other stuff.

I’m glad to see that we’ve still had posts here, because I don’t think this blog should die. And I am happy to have it used for “off topic” stuff as needed!

Anyway, the blog will hang out here, for sure. And if we can boggle at weird candidates or even John Aravosis freaking out every now and then, so much the better!

Anyone else want to post here too? Mail me and I’ll (probably) add you to the blogger list.

HR, See?

December 15, 2007

Occasionaly one can hear a political slimebucket mouth off something like this: If the right and the left hate me, then I must be doing something right.

Maybe.

But, there’s another distinct possibility.  Perhaps you’re going nothing right.

With that, I’ll turn to Chris Crain (and, for this post at least, eschew ‘Lame’):

What does it say about the inside-the-beltway captivity of the gay rights movement today when a mainstream newspaper is more aggressive and passionate on our behalf than “the nation’s largest gay rights group”?

When will the Human Rights Campaign stop acting like a wing of the Democratic Party and more like a wing of the [GLBT] rights movement?

My edit.

One more reason for me to hate the Scampaign: putting me in the position of being in agreement with Chris Crain.

Ya Think?

December 13, 2007

[UPDATED – 12/14/07, 3:01 CST]

From Queer Channel Media:

New Hampshire Democrats have given the Republicans a potent issue that’s ready to burst into the open just before the leadoff presidential primary: gay civil unions.

Will gay marriage greed never cease?

If New Hampshire had instead – as the ‘promise’ of ‘incremental progress’ would seem to dictate – rectified the state’s transphobic gay-only rights law, the story might instead be Mitt the Flip’s Mormonism and flip-floppery, and the anti-Obama dirty tricks by the now-ex staffer of HRC’s HRC.

But, some people just can’t get enough of elections being lost because of gay marriage greed.

[UPDATE]

From the Huffington Post:

Florida4Marriage, and its chairman, John Stemberger (a recognized leader in rental car accident law) are the people behind Florida’s new Marriage Protection Amendment, and yesterday they finally got the signatures they need to put it on the 2008 ballot.

So come on down! And while you’re in there, marking the magic X that proves you’re not a homo — and that your life wasn’t a squalid waste of everyone’s time, because at least you got yerself hitched — why not also vote for a Republican president?

Something for you. Something for the GOP. It’s a get-out-the-vote win/win.

Anti-gay amendments are the Happy Meal toy of Republican politics.

Especially in states where the G(L)OP knows it can get away with vote fraud…

even without Katherine Harris.

What Country Does Joe Scarborough Live In?

December 12, 2007

[UPDATED – 12/12/07 – 1:26 pm CST]

Mitt the Flip was on Morning Joe a few minutes ago.  It was a con-fest between he and host Joe Scarborough – both spewing the lie that America is a nation based on faith.

Sorry, boys; its a nation based on law – law written by human beings.

Ultimately, the subject of The Flip’s appearance was the endorsement of him by the National Review.  But, what really galled me was the fawning-spinmeistery that Joe engaged in immediately after the interview, essentially trying to rationalize the Mormon Flip into the lead in the G(L)OP prez race by minimizing the effect that his religion will have on the candidacy.  And, one remark stood out.  Of America, Joe said:

We don’t question people’s religious beliefs.

Really?

Since when?

What exactly do christian recruiters spend their time doing?  Reinforcing the non-christian beliefs (and, lets face it, in their eyes that includes Mormonism) that they are trying to con people into forsaking?

[UPDATE]

Does Joe believe in not questioning these beliefs?

A 16-year-old girl has died after allegedly being choked by her father over a dispute with her family over her refusal to wear the hijab, the Islamic headscarf worn by some Muslim women.

Peel Regional Police arrested a 57-year-old man Tuesday morning after receiving a 911 call from a suburban home in Mississauga from a man saying he had killed his daughter, according to a Toronto newspaper Web site.

According to the National Post, a Toronto newspaper Web site, when police arrived at the house they found the teen on the floor without any vital signs.

Friends of the teenager identified her as Aqsa Parvez and said they were shocked by her death but said her family was very strict.

“She got threatened by her father and her brother,” Dominiquia Holmes-Thompson told the newsaper. “He said that if she leaves, he would kill her.”

Another friend said she had previous fights with her father over wearing Islamic dress and wearing her hijab all of the time.

Yes, it happened in Canada – but don’t tell me it couldn’t happen (or hasn’t happened) here.

Are ya in questionin’ mode yet, Joe?

One Word: Rachel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

December 11, 2007

From C&L.  I just hope this materializes.  Tucker needs to go out and try to find a real job in the real world.

I can’t say I’ve been happier at programming news since the debut of The Colbert Report. TVNewser posted that a pilot for MSNBC has been taped, with Air America’s Rachel Maddow and MSNBC’s VP Bill Wolff (who frequently appears on Tucker) as hosts.

Be still my heart…could it be that the Bow Tie Boy is soon to be no more??? Oh happy day!

Go Rachel! Go Rachel! Go Rachel!

Bye bye, Tucker!
